Artist Statement

My work is in dialogue with the African Diasporic experience historically, presently, and also a platform for radical imagination in building black futures. I build sculptures that combine the past and the future, create cyanotypes, both as a way to mark the present with the light of the living sun, and as a metaphor for blueprints towards black futures. My curatorial practice forges inroads into communities and publics whose imaginations and histories often go untold, and my work with historically marginalized artists fuses these connections between artists and the publics they engage. As a contributing writer for Art in America, and previously Glasstire, the oldest continuously-run online art publication in Texas, my writing practice further bridges and contextualizes the art and social practices of the African Diaspora in spaces and contexts not often broadly accessible. I make and write about art, and I share the works of fellow artists. That is the core of my praxis.
